AI Memory for Non-Technical Users: Zero Code Required
You don't need to be a developer. You don't need to write code. You don't need to understand APIs or configure settings. You need to write a text file. If you've ever written a Word document, you can build AI memory.
What You're Actually Building
AI memory is a file on your computer that contains information about you. The AI reads this file at the start of every conversation and remembers the context.
The file is called CLAUDE.md. It's a plain text file written in a format called markdown. Markdown is just text with a few simple formatting rules (headings, lists, bold, italics). You already know how to use it — you just don't know it's called markdown.
Example of what goes in the file:
# Who I Am
Sarah Chen. Marketing director at a B2B software company.
# How I Work
I need quick answers. Don't explain things I already know. Use bullet points for clarity.
# Current Projects
- Launching new product campaign in Q1
- Rebuilding email automation workflows
- Training new marketing coordinator
That's it. Three sections. Plain text. No code.
Step 1: Install Obsidian
Obsidian is a text editor. It's free. You use it to write and organize markdown files.
Download it:
- Go to obsidian.md
- Click "Download" and choose your operating system (Windows, Mac, or Linux)
- Run the installer (double-click the downloaded file)
- Open Obsidian
When you first open Obsidian, it asks you to create a vault. A vault is just a folder where your notes are stored. Name it something like "AI Memory" or "Claude Vault" and choose a location on your computer (Documents folder works fine).
You now have a folder. That's step one.
Step 2: Create Your CLAUDE.md File
In Obsidian, create a new note:
- Click the "New note" button (or press Ctrl+N on Windows, Cmd+N on Mac)
- Name the file
CLAUDE(Obsidian adds the.mdautomatically) - Start writing
What to include:
Who You Are
Your name, job, company, role. Keep it short. One or two sentences.
# Who I Am
Jessica Martinez. CFO at a mid-sized manufacturing company in Ohio.
How You Work
Preferences for how the AI should respond. Do you want short answers or detailed explanations? Formal tone or casual? Bullet points or paragraphs?
# How I Work
Get to the point. I don't need background explanations. Use examples instead of theory.
Current Projects
What you're working on right now. This changes over time — you'll update this section as projects start and finish.
# Current Projects
- Budget planning for 2027
- Implementing new accounting software
- Hiring an assistant controller
Domain Knowledge
Specific knowledge relevant to your work. If you're in a specialized field, explain the basics so the AI doesn't give you generic advice.
# My Company
We manufacture industrial pumps. Main clients are chemical processing plants and water treatment facilities. Revenue: $50M annually. Team size: 200 employees.
That's the file. Save it.
Step 3: Install Claude Code
Claude Code is the tool that reads your CLAUDE.md file. It's a command-line program, which sounds technical but isn't. You run it in a terminal window.
Installation:
- Sign up for a Claude Pro account at claude.ai ($20/month)
- Download Claude Code from the download page
- Run the installer (double-click the file)
- Open a terminal window:
- Windows: Press Win+R, type
cmd, press Enter - Mac: Press Cmd+Space, type
terminal, press Enter
- Windows: Press Win+R, type
- Type
claude loginand press Enter - Follow the prompts to authenticate (you'll log in through your browser)
Claude Code is now installed. You don't need to touch the terminal again until you want to use it.
Step 4: Run Claude Code
Navigate to your vault folder in the terminal. This is the only "technical" part, and it's simpler than it sounds.
If your vault is in Documents/AI Memory, you type:
cd Documents/AI Memory
cd means "change directory." You're telling the terminal to go to that folder.
Then type:
claude
Press Enter. Claude Code starts. It reads your CLAUDE.md file automatically. You can now have a conversation, and Claude knows who you are and how you work.
What Markdown Actually Is
Markdown is a way to format text using simple symbols. You're already familiar with the concepts — you just didn't know the syntax.
- Headings: Use
#symbols. One#is a big heading, two##is smaller, three###is even smaller. - Bold text: Wrap text in double asterisks:
**bold** - Italic text: Wrap text in single asterisks:
*italic* - Lists: Start lines with
-for bullets or numbers for numbered lists. - Links:
[Link text](URL)
That's 90% of markdown. You don't need to memorize this. Obsidian has a toolbar with buttons for all of these. Click the button, and it inserts the formatting for you.
Updating Your Memory File
Your context changes. Projects finish. New priorities start. Your preferences evolve.
Updating the file is easy:
- Open Obsidian
- Open your CLAUDE.md file
- Edit the text (add new projects, remove old ones, change preferences)
- Save the file (Ctrl+S on Windows, Cmd+S on Mac)
Next time you run Claude Code, it reads the updated file. That's it. No syncing, no uploading, no configuration.
Common Questions from Non-Technical Users
"Do I need to learn coding?"
No. Writing a markdown file is not coding. You're writing a document with basic formatting. That's it.
"What if I make a mistake in the file?"
The worst that happens is the formatting looks weird. The AI will still read the content. You can fix formatting errors by editing the file. There's no way to "break" anything.
"What if I don't know what to put in the file?"
Start with the basics: who you are, what you do, and what you're working on. You can add more later. The file doesn't have to be perfect to be useful.
"How long should the file be?"
As long as it needs to be. Some people have a few paragraphs. Others have several pages. There's no minimum or maximum. Write enough that the AI has the context it needs to help you.
"What if I need help setting this up?"
That's what the $997 setup service is for. You get a consultation, a custom template built for your specific use case, and a walkthrough. You don't figure it out alone.
Real-World Example: Marketing Manager
Laura is a marketing manager. She doesn't code. She uses AI to draft emails, brainstorm campaign ideas, and create content outlines.
Her CLAUDE.md file:
# Who I Am
Laura Kim. Marketing Manager at GreenTech Solutions, a renewable energy startup.
# How I Work
Direct, actionable answers. I prefer examples over theory. Don't over-explain.
# Current Projects
- Launching solar panel campaign for residential market
- Planning Q2 webinar series on energy efficiency
- Rebuilding email nurture sequences for lead generation
# My Company
GreenTech Solutions. We sell solar panels and energy storage systems to homeowners and small businesses. Target market: suburban homeowners aged 35-55, environmentally conscious, middle to upper-middle income.
# Voice and Tone
Our brand is approachable, educational, not overly technical. We don't use jargon. We explain benefits, not features. Tone is friendly but professional.
When she asks Claude to draft an email for a campaign, it references her company, target market, and voice guidelines. She doesn't re-explain the brand every time. It's in the file.
Real-World Example: Small Business Owner
Tom owns a plumbing company. He uses AI to write estimates, respond to customer emails, and manage scheduling.
His CLAUDE.md file:
# Who I Am
Tom Richards. Owner of Richards Plumbing, serving the Denver metro area for 15 years.
# How I Work
Keep it simple. I'm not technical. Plain language only. Short answers.
# My Business
We do residential plumbing: repairs, installations, water heater replacements, drain cleaning. No commercial work. Service area: Denver and surrounding suburbs. Team: me plus 3 technicians.
# Common Services and Pricing
- Drain cleaning: $150-$300 depending on severity
- Water heater replacement: $1,200-$2,500 depending on unit
- Toilet replacement: $300-$500
- Leak repair: $100-$400 depending on location and complexity
# Customer Communication
Always friendly, professional, and clear. Explain the problem in terms customers understand. Avoid plumbing jargon. Emphasize reliability and quality.
When he asks Claude to draft a response to a customer inquiry, it references his pricing, service area, and communication style. He doesn't re-type the same information every time.
You Don't Need to Be Technical
The entire setup is:
- Download Obsidian (free)
- Write a text file with basic information about yourself
- Download Claude Code (requires $20/month Claude Pro subscription)
- Run one command in a terminal to start a conversation
None of that requires programming knowledge. It's installing software, writing a document, and typing a command. If you've ever installed an app on your computer and written a Word document, you can do this.
The reason it feels technical is because it's unfamiliar. Once you've done it once, it's routine.
