Why AI Doesn't Follow Your Instructions

Group these patterns into categories. Create sections in your context file for formatting rules, voice guidelines, output requirements, and domain-specific instructions. Under formatting, list every preference you've repeated: heading case, bullet style, paragraph length, spacing, structure.
Make instructions explicit and testable. "Use a professional tone" is vague. "Avoid exclamation points, use active voice, keep sentences under 25 words" is specific. The AI can verify compliance with specific rules. Vague guidelines produce inconsistent results.
Update the file when you find yourself repeating a new instruction. If you've told the AI three times in one week to include word counts at the top of documents, that instruction belongs in the context file. The third repetition is the signal: make it permanent.
