Claude Memory Problems and How to Fix Them

But projects have hard limits:

  • Custom instructions max out around 4,000 characters
  • You can't reference external files or dynamic data
  • Updates require manual editing in the project settings
  • No way to organize context by domain or topic
  • Projects don't talk to each other—context stays siloed

For simple use cases, projects suffice. For real work—managing multiple clients, tracking ongoing tasks, maintaining business systems—they fall short fast.

The File-Based Memory Solution

Claude can read files. This changes everything.

Instead of relying on built-in memory or project instructions, you store context in markdown files. One main file (CLAUDE.md) contains your core instructions, preferences, and system rules. Domain-specific files hold specialized context—client details, project status, business processes.

When you start a session, Claude reads these files. Now it knows:

  • Who you are and what you do
  • Current projects and their status
  • Business rules and processes
  • Client information and history
  • Your communication preferences

This context loads every session. As your work evolves, you update the files. Claude's "memory" stays current because it's reading living documentation, not stale project settings.

When you start a Claude session and mention a client name, Claude reads that client's context file. It knows their project status, outstanding tasks, and communication history. You don't re-explain anything.

After the session, Claude updates the relevant files with new information—decisions made, tasks completed, next steps. The vault stays current automatically.

Next week, you open Claude and ask about that client. All the context from last week is there. You pick up where you left off.

The Real Fix Isn't Built-In Memory

AI companies will keep adding memory features. They'll get better at inferring what to remember and when. But algorithmic memory has a ceiling—it guesses at what matters based on patterns, not your explicit intent.

File-based context puts you in control. You decide what Claude remembers. You organize it how you work. You update it when things change. The memory system reflects your actual needs, not what an algorithm thinks you need.
