Automatic Extraction Is Unreliable

Verify Immediately
After telling ChatGPT to remember something, ask it to repeat what it stored. Check Settings to confirm the memory appears. If it doesn't stick immediately, it won't stick later.
Clean Up Regularly
Review and delete outdated or incorrect memories. ChatGPT doesn't do this automatically. Accumulated wrong memories create worse problems than no memories.
Use Custom Instructions Too
Put your most critical context in Custom Instructions, not just Memory. Custom Instructions have their own limits (1,500 characters) but are more reliable for core information.
